One of Attenborough’s most preferred spots has always been the Great Barrier Reef, which he first visited in 1957. In his own words, Attenborough says: “60 years ago I dived in the reef for the first time, and since then it held a deep fascination for me. It is truly one of the most extraordinary places on the planet.”
A vast & beautiful wonder of the natural world, the Great Barrier Reef stretches 2,300 kilometers down the eastern coast of Australia. Made up of 3,000 individual coral reefs & 900 islands, it is a living structure so enormous, it could be seen from space.
With over 1,500 species of fish, 600 types of coral and 30 different species of whale and dolphin, it is one of the most bio-diverse and complex ecosystems on the planet.
During his many visits to the Great Barrier Reef, Attenborough explored the complex structure from many underwater diving spots, over the islands, from the air, on boats and in submarines, in the shallows and the deep to uncover many secrets of this fascinating ecosystem.
