White Desert

A private camp deep in the Antarctic interior, reached by jet from Cape Town, where the last untouched continent opens out in every direction and the sun never sets.

Satopia Travel presents A cinematic travel experience In partnership with White Desert
The Camp

A camp built for the deep interior, where the continent does all the talking.

You leave Cape Town in the morning and step off the jet onto a blue-ice runway five hours later, into a silence and a scale that nowhere else on earth can offer. There are no towns here, no roads, no night. Just ice to the horizon, the Wohlthat mountains rising out of it, and the camp waiting beside a frozen lake.

The sleeping pods are warm, quiet and pitched at the comfort of a fine hotel, set down lightly on the ice and taken away without trace at season's end. Beyond the door lies a continent the size of the United States and Mexico together, and for a few days it is yours to explore.

The Camp

There is no night and no other soul for hundreds of miles, only the ice, the light and wherever you choose to walk into it.

01 Accommodation

Heated pods on the ice, with the comfort of a fine hotel.

The sleeping pods are warm and quiet, lined in felt and timber, each with a proper bed, a writing desk and a view of nothing but white. Outside it may be twenty below; inside you sleep in shirtsleeves, with eye masks against a sun that never goes down.

A central dome holds the fire, the table and the wine, and the whole camp is taken privately for your group. It is set on the ice with the lightest touch, and removed without trace when the season ends.

02 Culinary

A private chef, at the bottom of the world.

Everything that reaches the table is flown in and cooked fresh: long lunches after a morning on the ice, a glass of something cold poured straight from the snow, dinners that would hold their own in any capital, served as the low sun swings around the dome.

It is the most improbable address a kitchen could keep, and the cooking rises to it. Dietary wishes are known before you arrive, and the cellar travels with the camp.

03 Experiences

Emperor penguins, the South Pole, and a continent to yourself.

The days are yours to shape. Fly to a colony of emperor penguins and sit among thousands of them on the sea ice. Climb the frozen waves of a wind-carved ridge, abseil into a blue ice tunnel, or walk out across a glacier with a guide and hear, for once, complete silence.

And for a few, the journey of a lifetime: a flight on to the Geographic South Pole, to stand at the bottom of the earth where the lines all meet.

04 Wellness

The clearest air on earth, and nothing to hurry for.

Wellness here is the place itself: air that has never carried pollution, a quiet so complete you hear your own pulse, and a horizon with nothing on it to pull at your attention. People arrive wired from the world and leave unwound.

Days run to your own clock under the endless sun, with as much exertion or as much stillness as you want, and a sleep at the end of them that is hard to find anywhere else.

05 Service

A seasoned polar team in camp, and one designer over the whole expedition.

In camp you are looked after by guides, pilots, doctors and field staff who have given their lives to the ice, the safest hands on the continent. Nothing moves here without their judgement, and it is theirs that lets you roam so freely.

Behind them sits your Satopia travel designer, who arranges the jet, the dates and every link in the chain from your front door to the pole, and stays one call away throughout.

06 Setting

The last place on earth that no one owns.

Antarctica belongs to no country. It is held in common, for science and for peace, the one continent we agreed to leave alone. To stand in its interior is to see the planet as it was before any of us, ice two miles deep and mountains that have never been named.

The camp sits among the Wohlthat mountains of Queen Maud Land, beside a frozen lake, and leaves nothing behind. You come as a guest of the ice, and the ice keeps no record that you were there.

For the explorer

The last continent.

For the traveller who has been most places and wants the one that almost no one reaches: the deep interior, the South Pole, the ice itself.

For a milestone

The trip of a lifetime.

A landmark birthday or a long-promised dream, marked at the bottom of the earth. Few journeys carry the weight that this one does.

For a private group

The camp, on request.

Subject to season and availability, the camp can be taken for your family or your closest friends, with the guides, the flights and the days shaped around your party.

For the naturalist

Emperors & the ice.

A colony of emperor penguins on the sea ice, light no photographer forgets, and a continent given over to science and to wonder.

Plan your journey

How far is it from you?

Choose where you would set out from. We'll estimate the flight and how much the time change is likely to ask of you.

The Satopia Advantage™

You choose the place.
We'll do all the planning.

We hold the relationship with White Desert, so we can place your group on the ice on your dates, and join it to everything around it. From there a single travel designer composes the whole expedition. You simply arrive.

What we secure

Your place at camp, or the camp privately, with the jet from Cape Town and the South Pole flights that sell out a year ahead.

What we arrange

Every link composed by one travel designer: Cape Town either side, the polar kit, the guides and the days on the ice, end to end.

Satopia Insider

A few things worth knowing.

Drawn from recent guests.

Build flexibility into your flight schedule

Polar weather dictates all arrivals, so build flexibility into your travel window before heading south from Cape Town. The team handles complex flight logistics smoothly, but strong winds can occasionally require patience and schedule adjustments. Proper kit selection during your preparation stage ensures you remain comfortable when touching down on the ice.

Prioritise the guided ice tunnel explorations

Make time to explore the remote ice tunnels and frozen waves with the expert mountain guides. Learning ice climbing or hiking across the glaciers pushes your limits in a safe environment. Guests often remember these active explorations alongside the surprising quality of multi course dining served in the remote camps.

Extend your stay

Want to make more of it? We'll plan that too.

Antarctica begins and ends in Cape Town, so most travellers make a wider journey of it. A few we'd pair it with, each arranged as one seamless experience.
