Sitting on its own island surrounded by the Adriatic Sea is Mamula Island, a 19th-century fortress reborn as an intimate luxury hotel. Every unforgettable stay begins with a speedboat ride towards Mamula’s tiny island in the Bay of Kotor, where you’ll be welcomed with a glass of Champagne under the shade of an olive tree. From here, guests are free to indulge in everything Mamula has to offer, from poolside lounging to holistic spa treatments. Evenings can begin with craft cocktails in the intimate bar or with a sunset poolside drink before embarking on a culinary journey through Montenegro at the excellent fine-dining restaurant Kamena. Add to this a range of activities on the mainland to discover authentic Montenegro and the beauty of the Balkans, and Mamula truly offers a stay to remember.

An Authentic Montenegrin Experience
As a protected historical monument, Mamula Island underwent a careful and sensitive restoration to preserve its structure with minimal intervention. A team of heritage specialists were brought onboard to work with the local authorities and ensure that every original part of the structure, from the staircase in the circular atrium to the colourful frescoes in the heritage suites, were restored to their former glory. Mamula Island has also taken a sensitive approach to Montenegro’s history and culture as a whole, including employing an enthusiastic team of Montenegrins, championing the country’s local and seasonal produce in the three restaurants, and designing a range of authentic excurions to discover the true Montenegro.
A Hotel with History
Built back in 1852 by the Austro-Hungarian Admiral Lazar Mamula, Mamula Island began life as a fortress intended to protect the Bay of Kotor. After years of sitting abandoned and falling into disrepair, Mamula has now been given a sensitive renovation by a team of heritage specialists which has transformed it into a luxurious boutique hotel. Rooms have been dressed in earthy, neutral shades which blend in seamlessly with the colours of the fortress’ brick walls, whilst layers of organic materials such as wood, stone, and textiles nod to the hotel’s natural surroundings. Depending on their mood, guests can choose from restored historic rooms with original vaulted ceilings and centuries-old frescoes, or opt for one of the newly build Garden Rooms which come with private terraces and endless views of the glittering blue Adriatic
Restore and Revive Body and Mind
Mamula Island’s secluded and natural setting makes it the perfect place to reset both body and mind. The fortress’s circular atrium has being transformed into Mamula’s soothing spa, a haven of tranquility which offers a complete 360 degree wellness experience. Yoga, Pilates, sound and energy healing classes take place under the vaulted ceilings of the two ritual rooms, or weather permitting, on the open outdoor deck with endless views of the Adriatic. Classes can be complemented with relaxation time in the Finnish sauna, herbal sauna, steam bath, salt room, and rooms for halotherapy and flotation therapy. Finish the experience with a moment of indulgence by booking a face and body treatment courtesy of the science-based natural Swiss skincare brand ananné, which has developed signature treatments exclusively for Mamula Island.
